Note:
I forgot to mention that Chris and I ran a half-marathon on May 6th in Indy. It was the biggest half-marathon in the world, there were 35,000 or so people in it. There were so many people that our first mile time was about 10 minutes because we just couldn't get around people. I predicted that I would run my first mini in 2 hours. We went over the line at 1:59:54!!!!
It was a lot of fun until about mile 11, where I was sore and I just wanted to be done. It was good to have Chris run with me, keep me going. I think I want to do the Muncie Mini in the fall...mebbe. Right now, I am just thinking about the 4th of July 5K. I want another trophy this year!!! I want to PR again, too.
Alright, onto today's subject:
Being Patriotic.
I made an important discovery last month about my car. I went home, to Michigan, and I decided to cruise at 65 mph the whole way home. When I filled up, I was getting 33 mpg! I usually was getting about 28 mpg going 70mph on the highway. And the trip only took an extra 10 minutes in time...maybe.
So now I am all about driving slow. (I know *
*)
And I am saving a TON of money on gas. At my last fillup, I was getting over 32 mpg. I still drive close to the speed limit, 65 on the highway and 55 on state roads. 55 is the limit on state roads, so I am doing pretty good.
Anyways, I was discussing this fact with a friend of mine, who lived through the oil crisis of the 1970s. He said that back then, the speed limit was lowered, to help people conserve gas, and that driving slower was a way that Americans could be patriotic. It helped to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, since we were using less in our travels.
As I get flicked off by fellow drivers who pass me going 85 mph, I just think to myself about the money I am saving.
But it also makes me sad. Most of the people passing me, going 70-80 mph, are in SUV's. They don't give a shit about being patriotic.
Everyone is complaining about about gas prices, but I still see people filling up, driving everywhere, and driving very fast. No one is doing anything about it, maybe because they think that they can't. Driving 5 mph slower saved me 5 mpg. That will add up, if everyone starts doing it. It is already adding up for me, as an individual.
And I feel like a patriot, in my own way.
